How the Advocacy Tool reaches attendees
The Advocacy Tool is where your attendees share your event: they see your campaign’s images and suggested post, and share them on their own channels. You set it up for each attendee campaign, on the campaign’s Distribution tab.
There are three ways to show it:
- Pop-up: opens over your page, usually the registration confirmation page, right after someone signs up
- Embedded in a page: sits inside the page itself, like an attendee hub or an event info page
- Link in an email: a link you add to confirmation emails or reminders, which opens the Advocacy Tool as its own page
You can use more than one. Set one up, then come back and pick another.
Note: This code only adds the Advocacy Tool. To count registrations as conversions, please also see Conversion tracking.
Distribution tab
- Go to the Event
- Click Attendee Campaigns on the left-hand side menu
- Click your campaign, then click Distribution
- Under How will attendees find it?, click Pop-up, Embedded in a page or Link in an email
For a pop-up or embed, you will then see three steps:
- Registration confirmation page platform: choose HTML, Visit by GES, Pheedloop, Cvent or Eventbrite. HTML is chosen to start with
- Attendee-Level Reporting: if you are on Gleanin Pro or have the Attendee-Level Reporting add-on, choose Yes to report each registrant’s ID against their shares. With HTML, Pheedloop or Eventbrite, please replace CHANGE_ME in the code with your registration platform’s unique registration ID, or delete that line. Cvent and Visit by GES fill this in for you
- Add the code to your page: copy the code by clicking the copy button next to it. For a pop-up, you can also set the Delay before appearing (seconds)
The delay is saved straight away. Your platform and reporting choices aren’t saved, so you will need to choose them again next time. If you change the platform, the reporting choice or the delay, please copy the code again.
For an embed, the code starts with a line that marks where the Advocacy Tool appears. Please make sure it goes exactly where you want it on the page.
Adding the Advocacy Tool to a standard HTML page
- Go to the Event
- Click Attendee Campaigns on the left-hand side menu
- Click your campaign, then click Distribution
- Under How will attendees find it?, click Pop-up or Embedded in a page
- Under Registration confirmation page platform, keep HTML
- Optional: set Attendee-Level Reporting to Yes and replace CHANGE_ME in the code
- For a pop-up, set the Delay before appearing (seconds) if you’d like it to wait
- Under Add the code to your page, copy the code
- Send it to whoever manages your registration confirmation page and ask them to add it to that page only
Adding the Advocacy Tool using Google Tag Manager
- Follow steps 1–8 above, keeping HTML
- In Google Tag Manager, find the container used for this event
- Create a new tag named “Gleanin Advocacy Tool YEAR” and set the tag type to Custom HTML
- Paste the code into the HTML box
- Apply an existing trigger, or create a new one, that fires only on the confirmation page, for example a page path containing thank-you
- Save all changes
Note: For an embed, the line that marks where the Advocacy Tool appears must be on the page itself, so please ask your website provider to add it.
Adding the Advocacy Tool on Cvent pages
Cvent pages don’t support the pop-up, so please use Embedded in a page.
- Go to the Event
- Click Attendee Campaigns on the left-hand side menu
- Click your campaign, then click Distribution
- Click Embedded in a page
- Under Registration confirmation page platform, choose Cvent
- Optional: set Attendee-Level Reporting to Yes
- Copy the code
- In Cvent, go to the Website & Registration tab and choose Registration Process
- Click Customise for the confirmation page
- Under Page Elements, drag Code to where you want the Advocacy Tool to appear. If you don’t see Code, please ask Cvent to switch it on for you
- Paste the code
- Click Apply Changes, then Save
Adding the Advocacy Tool on Visit by GES pages
- Go to the Event
- Click Attendee Campaigns on the left-hand side menu
- Click your campaign, then click Distribution
- Click Pop-up or Embedded in a page
- Under Registration confirmation page platform, choose Visit by GES
- Optional: set Attendee-Level Reporting to Yes
- For a pop-up, set the Delay before appearing (seconds) if you’d like it to wait
- Copy the code
- In Visit, go to the event, click Forms on the left-hand side menu and choose the form
- Choose the Complete page and stay on Current Page Settings, so the code is on the confirmation page only
- Click Edit JavaScript
- Paste the code and save your changes
Adding the Advocacy Tool on Pheedloop pages
Pheedloop’s custom code runs on every page, so the Pheedloop code only shows the Advocacy Tool on the confirmation page. We recommend the pop-up, as we haven’t been able to confirm that the embed works on a Pheedloop form.
- Go to the Event
- Click Attendee Campaigns on the left-hand side menu
- Click your campaign, then click Distribution
- Click Pop-up
- Under Registration confirmation page platform, choose Pheedloop
- Optional: set Attendee-Level Reporting to Yes and replace CHANGE_ME in the code
- Set the Delay before appearing (seconds) if you’d like it to wait
- Copy the code
- In Pheedloop, go to the Event Website and click Settings
- Click Custom code and paste the code
Adding the Advocacy Tool on Eventbrite
How you add the Advocacy Tool depends on how your attendees register:
- An Eventbrite form: you can send registrants to the Advocacy Tool, or to your own page with the pop-up or embed, when they finish registering
- Eventbrite’s embedded checkout on your website: you can send registrants to another page when they finish, or show the Gleanin pop-up on the same page
Eventbrite form
Please have your link ready. It can be your campaign’s sendable link (see Sending a link in an email below), or the address of your own thank-you page with the pop-up or embed added.
- Log in to Eventbrite and click Manage my events
- Choose your event
- Choose Order options, then Order confirmation
- Under Customise Webpage, find Message For Order Confirmation Page (No Html Tags Allowed)
- Enter only the URL in this box
- Scroll to the bottom and click Save Settings
We recommend registering for your event yourself to check that you’re happy with the flow.
Eventbrite embedded checkout
Both options use the callback function in Eventbrite’s embed code: code that Eventbrite runs when an order is complete. Eventbrite’s code already includes a placeholder for it, called exampleCallback.
Before adding Gleanin, please add Eventbrite’s embed code to your website and make sure it works. These steps involve editing JavaScript, so you may want to ask a technical teammate for help.
To send registrants to another page when they finish:
Change Eventbrite’s placeholder callback function to the following, replacing https://example.com with your campaign’s sendable link or your own thank-you page:
var exampleCallback = function() {
console.log('Order complete!');
setTimeout(function () {
window.location.assign("https://example.com");
}, 500);
};
The 500 is how long to wait, in milliseconds, before sending them on. Set it to 0 to send them straight away.
To show the Gleanin pop-up when they finish, follow the steps below:
- Go to the Event
- Click Attendee Campaigns on the left-hand side menu
- Click your campaign, then click Distribution
- Click Pop-up
- Under Registration confirmation page platform, choose Eventbrite
- Optional: set Attendee-Level Reporting to Yes and replace CHANGE_ME in the code
- Set the Delay before appearing (seconds) if you’d like it to wait
- Copy the code
- In your Eventbrite embed code, paste it immediately before the line that starts var exampleCallback = …
- Find the line that starts onOrderComplete: exampleCallback, third from the end of Eventbrite’s code, and replace exampleCallback with insertGleaninFiles
Once you’ve made either change, please register for your event through the embedded checkout to check it works as you want. If you have any problems, please email hello@gleanin.com with a description and a link to the page with your embedded checkout.
Sending a link in an email
- Go to the Event
- Click Attendee Campaigns on the left-hand side menu
- Click your campaign, then click Distribution
- Click Link in an email
- Under Sendable link, click Copy link
You will see the message Link copied. Add the link to your confirmation emails or other attendee messages. You can use it as well as the pop-up or embed, or instead of them.
