# Setting up multi-factor authentication (MFA)

## In this article, you’ll learn how to protect your Gleanin login with multi-factor authentication, including turning it on, recovery codes, turning it off and what to do if you lose your phone.

### **How multi-factor authentication works**

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds a second step when you sign in. As well as your password, you enter a 6-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone, such as Google Authenticator, Authy or 1Password. Someone who learns your password still can’t sign in without your phone.

- One setting for your login - it applies to you on every Gleanin account you belong to.
- An email each time - Gleanin emails you whenever multi-factor authentication is turned on or off.

### **Turning on multi-factor authentication**

**To turn on multi-factor authentication, follow the steps below:**

1. Click your name at the bottom of the left-hand side menu
2. Click **User settings**
3. Click **Security**
4. Next to **Multi-factor authentication (MFA)**, click **Set up**
5. Open your authenticator app and scan the QR code
     1. If you can’t scan it, enter the key under **Or enter this secret key manually:** into your app
6. Click **Continue**
7. Enter the 6-digit code your app shows for Gleanin
8. Click **Verify and enable**
9. Click **Done**

From your next sign-in, Gleanin will ask for a code after your password.

### **Recovery codes**

Once multi-factor authentication is on, you can create recovery codes and keep them as a backup.

1. Click your name at the bottom of the left-hand side menu
2. Click **User settings**
3. Click **Security**
4. Next to **Recovery codes**, click **Generate**
5. Click **Copy codes** and keep them somewhere safe, such as a password manager
6. Click **Return to security**

You get 10 codes, and each can be used once.

Note: For your security, Gleanin only creates codes within 5 minutes of you entering an MFA code. The easiest time is straight after turning multi-factor authentication on. Otherwise, please sign out, sign in again with your code, and create them straight away.

Please keep in mind that clicking **Regenerate** creates new codes and the codes you saved before stop working.

### **Turning off multi-factor authentication**

For your security, you can only turn it off within 5 minutes of entering an MFA code. If you signed in a while ago, please sign out and sign in again first.

1. Click your name at the bottom of the left-hand side menu
2. Click **User settings**
3. Click **Security**
4. Next to **Multi-factor authentication (MFA)**, click **Disable**
5. Click **Disable MFA**

You will see the message **MFA disabled**.

### **If you lose your authenticator app**

If you get a new phone or lose your authenticator app, please contact us at [hello@gleanin.com](mailto:hello@gleanin.com). For your security, we’ll check who you are, for example on a video call, before turning multi-factor authentication off for you. You can then set it up again on your new phone.

If you’re changing phones and still have the old one, please turn multi-factor authentication off and on again, or move your accounts in your authenticator app, before you switch.

### **Accounts that require multi-factor authentication**

Some accounts require everyone on them to use multi-factor authentication. If yours does and you haven’t turned it on, Gleanin won’t load your events until you do. You can still open **User settings** to turn it on.
